In the dj world we find ourselves having to introduce songs - sometimes in other languages, or names with silent letters. It got some of us talking about troubled names. Someone wondered to what degree djs would avoid playing someone like, say, irish artist Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill because we'd be too scared of messing up her name.

Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill : "Three-o-na Nee Go-null" Triona is the sister of Micheál O Domnaill. Shes been in the bands, Nightnoise, and Skara Brae, The Bothy Band and Relativity. This is her solo album, self titled. Her brother Michael's last name is Ó'Domhnaill, hers is Ni Dhomnaill. In Irish, "O" means son of Domhnaill and "Ní" Dhomnaill means daughter of Domhnaill.
Carla Ulbrichs responce to the question about playing Maighread Ni dhomhnall because we couldnt pronounce the name said: " If I were Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, I think I'd go by "Ni."

Vowels are divided into being either "Broad vowels" or "slender". Broad are "a, o and u" and these make consonants behave differently than the slender vowels "of e and i." Think about English, we say car and recieve.... hard near the a, soft near the i and e.... but the letter c in irinsh is always pronounced hard, like CAR, never soft like ceiling. (Celtics, with a soft c, is only an american pronunciation for a football team)
