The Flowing Waters of Lake Jefferson

Saturday  March 22, 2008: Station Slogans and Who Played What

Folk Plus is a lyrically-based, themed comtemporary folk show. There may be bits of broadway, spoken word or oldies memories included, and thats the Plus part. The show is hosted and planned by Angela Page and airs Saturdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on WJFF, at 90.5 fm in Jeffersonville, N.Y. and 94.5 in Monticello N.Y.
We are Hydro-Powered Public Radio and stream online at WWW.WJFFRADIO.ORG  Come see the station at our open house the first Saturday of every month. Welcome new web listeners, especially those battling illness or who are housebound.

THANKS SO MUCH to the station management for accommodating  my health issues which allow me to continue to volunteer Saturday  mornings and bring you the music that 'moves and sustains me."

Angela Page of Folk Plus

FOLKDJ-L is an electronic discussion group for people who are interested in all folk-based music (bluegrass, old-time, traditional balladry, traditional international music, singer-songwriters, etc.) on the radio. The group was established primarily for DJs, but others are welcome as well. Current subscribers include:

The forum is an opportunity for us to compare notes on such topics as record company service, new releases, fundraising, interviewing, operational and technical issues, relationships with station management, and the future of folk music on the radio. Many of us post our playlists for the rest to review.

There are postings of top albums played by year, lists of djs participating by station and country and call letters....

Recently a topic of discussion was the fact that Boston's WUMB is going towards more eclectic programming, and are changing their slogan from "Folk Radio" to "WUMB Music Mix".  The changes, the result of studies funded by a Corporation for Public Broadcasting station renewal grant,

Larry Hoyt hosts a show in Syracuse NY called "Common Threads" He is just one of the couple of hundred DJs on the FOLKD-J list. After reading about WUMB he asked the group.."
Why not let listeners know about this format shift by using a more accurate, more inclusive slogan?"
Then he asked folkdj posters internationally to share their slogans.

I shared some of ours..good to the last watt, water powered radio, best station by a dam site.On Folk Plus weekly, as you know, I take a theme and use contemporary travelling bards,
performers, whatever you want to call them, including broadway, spoken word, funny skits and whatever works to compliment the complitaion of the day's theme.
Today on Folk Plus, I will be sharing some other station's slogans, and highlighting some of the many "folk dj" stations who post on the folk dj list of international djs.
Slogans, and Who plays WHAT

I am starting with Larry hoyt who began the discussion on slogans.

LarryHoyt: Larry Hoyt - Common Threads  / WAER-FM  Syracuse, New York  on the web at
WAER bills itself as "Music, News and NPR from Central New York."
Our short on-air description is now "88.3 WAER",Syracuse

Common Threads: folk and acoustic music, plus selections from today's
top singer/songwriters
airing Sundays from 12 noon to 3 pm, and from his playlist of
March 16, 2008:

1. Amy Gallatin & Roger Williams -  Something 'Bout You - Something 'Bout You -
Linda Fagey - (WKSU's 24/7 internet Folk station) has a slogan. ......
"All Folk, All the Time" ..... simple and to the point.
This group of stations broadcast programming, originating from WKSU, to Northeast Ohio, portions of Northwest Pennsylvania and Southern Ontario.
WKSU, Kent - WKRW, Wooster - WKRJ, New Philadelphia - WKSV, Thompson WNRK, Norwalk

David Fuente, WKSU Stations   Kent, OH
Eighty Nine Seven: NPR, Classical, News and other smart stuff. The folk, folk/roots, traditional, alt country, modern bluegrass,
Americana, world, Celtic, acoustic new age and singer-songwriter portion is just implied in the "other smart stuff" part.
From david's playist of March 1, 2008:

2. Lynn Miles- You Don't Love me Anymore-
Slightly Haunted - Philo

The Comfort Zone is hosted by Gail Comfort (from London, England) farnborough, Hants, UK
on CMR Nashville
Listen live Their slogan: Europe's Hottest 24/7 Country Music Service
Gail's show is repeated...Tuesday, Wed and Sunday each week, and a couple of weeks ago she honored Townes Van Zandt being born 7th March 1944.

3. Townes Van Zandt - I'll Be Here in the Morning-Townes Van Zandt - Tomato

WEFTCommunity Radio 90.1 FM Champaign, IL, ON-LINE AT:
From the Joshua Tree Inn – "the best in contemporary folk, country & bluegrass ... & all those regions in between."

Now in its 22nd year ... hosted by Kevin Elliott for the past
12 years ... every Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM central time.

4. Brooks Williams – 61 Highway – The Time I Spend with You – Red Guitar Blue Music –

The Folk Show with Mike Alzo
Fridays 7:00 - 8:00 PM on WSLU 89.5 FM
"North Country Public Radio" from St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY 13617
Playlist   -   The Folk Show   - 14 March 2008  [Spring Fundraiser]

5. John Prine - Illegal smile - John Prine -
Gene Shay - of WXPN said " From my ad agency experience, coming up with a good slogan is very difficult. I handled creative direction for a whole bunch
of AM, FM and TV stations over the years and trying to boil down the true essence of a station's format into a snappy one-liner is very tricky. Most of the
time, just the very fact you have a slogan makes you come off as "slick" and overly promotional, (anathema for a folk audience)

My favorite slogan or "non-slogan" was the one developed in the 70's for WMMR, Philadelphia by the talented PD Jerry Stevens:
This is WMMR......Philadelphia...The Radio Station.

Playlist: Gene Shay, Sunday, 3-9-08, 8-11 PM,
Host of the Folk Show, WXPN, Philadelphia

7. Lucy Kaplansky - I've Just Seen A Face - The Tide - Red House

Terry B Moses and Naomi Soule: I like the one we have "89.1 The Wood...Commercial Free Radio" It says what we are.
Terry Moses   KCLC Acoustic Edge,   St. Louis MO
Comments on other area stations:
KMOX in St. Louis used to be "The Only Station You'll Ever Need" and of course it is the "Voice of St. Louis"
KSHE is "The Rock of St. Louis". Considering it is the heritage FM rock station in the market that again is the correct slogan (now called positioning statements).
When I was Program Director at KDHX and streaming audio on the internet was just starting to come into play I wanted us to claim we were "World Class Community
Radio." Since we were streaming we were broadcasting to the world. I could never get anyone to buy into it. From a february playlist of The Acoustic Edge...
Gretchin Peters, The Secret of Life - Trio - Purple Crayon but I brought her new release instead, so I played

8. Gretchen Peters
- Sunday Morning - Burnt Toast & Offerings - Scarlet Letters
________________________ Mid-way through the slogan postings, Larry Hoyt of Syracuse, who started the thread asked...." I'm kinda copping this from an Anne Feeney song,
"Look to the Left of Your Dial," but does any station we know of use the phrase

9. Anne Feeney - Look to the left of your Dial -
Look to the left of your Dial - Inverted Turlte ______________________

Yes---THE RIGHT PLACE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DIAL. Interestingly, about 10
years back when I interview Ronnie Gilbert she recorded it for TRADITIONS
and I loved the way she did it heavy emphasis on the word "left" --The Right Place on the LEFT side of the dial.

Bill Hahn, Producer/Host WFDU 89.1 FM Teaneck, NJ
He hosts both Traditions & Tabletalk & Sunday Simcha
Sunday Simcha airs 10-11 A M ET and streams on the web. From March 9

10. Modern Man - Virtual Circle of Hell - Modern Immaturity -

Ron Olesko ( WFDU-FM Teaneck, NJ 07666
We really do not use slogans at WFDU as a practice. The phrase that Bill Hahn mentioned earlier "the right place to be on the left side of
the dial" is as close as we get, ...As we are owned by Fairleigh Dickinson University, we also use the phrase "the global voice of F.D.U."
to emphasis the university push on satellite colleges
around the globe
WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS, Playlist for March 16, 2008

11. Joe Crookston - Mending Walls - Able Baker Charlie & Dog -

KPFK, which is a Pacifica station, has a slogan, "Powered By The People". I have been there 38 years, and unfortunately they are still living in the
60's. I hate that slogan, and I refuse to use it. Roz Larman
FolkScene is a syndicated music program established in 1970. The program features recorded music, and in studio live performances. For more on
FolkScene please see

12. Ray Bonneville - So Long Blues 3:52- Goin' By Feel" Red House Records

Art Dean, WCNI Radio at Connecticut College New London, CT
Our former, although sometimes still used, slogan took advantage of our former, before power upgrade a few years back, frequency and cold war target
status being a couple of miles from the US Navy Submarine Base in Groton Connecticut. WCNI, 91 1, Ground Zero Radio.
Cutely subversive until Sept., 2001. We did get a few phone calls about this back then. Our current station slogan "WCNI, For The Love Of Music "
from a playlist for 3-2-08

13. Cara Dillon - Here's A Health - After The Morning Compass

Art Menius, Director Appalshop Whitesburg, KY
From the Roots on WMMT-FM 88.7 Whitesburg, KY has a number of slogans as befits a station that plays everything from old-time to hip-hop.
The official one is "Mountain Community Radio from the Appalshop."
Other in currency include "Real People's Radio," "Possum Radio," "My
Source," and "It's Tom T. Hall meets the Ramones at a roadhouse in Paradise."
"Raise a Ruckus - brought newest uncle earl
14. Uncle Earl - One True 229 - Watrloo, Tennessee - Rounder

Bruce Hayden from California wrote " Many years ago, in the very early 90's, KVMR was having severe economic difficulties with a having a huge debt crisis just as the worst recession in California's history was beginning. As part of the marketing of the
station we were searching for a way to augment the "Full Spectrum Radio" which was its slogan at the time. We printed a pamphlet with large bold letters, "KVMR, Not Easy Listening". Inside were all the programs which appeared on KVMR. I used to also mentioned in public meetings with supporters that "if like everything played on this station, perhaps we need to pay your shrinks bill,
nobody is that eclectic". It always got a laugh.

Nevada City Limits airs on alternate Fridays from 10am to 12pm in the Pacific time zone (USA).
They broadcast on KVMR-FM in Nevada City, California at 89.5 MHz and via translator in the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee, California
KVMR covers much of the eastern side of Northern California and rest of the world via the internet at
The host of Nevada City Limits is Dennis Brunnenmeyer. Last week he played this...

Tom Bingham - WCVF-FM
Fredonia, NY says "We have a diverse format and a lot of listeners both on- and-off campus,
spanning all age groups. We're called "88-9, The Voice", which was shortened
from "The Voice of Northern Chautauqua County." We may not cover a lot of
territory geographically (internet aside), but our slogan covers a lot of
territory musically." From his PLAYLIST: "General Eclectic", WCVF-FM, 2/8/08

20. Jimmy LaFave
- Car Outside - Cimarron Manifesto

WMUC-FM, UMD in College Park, MD 0800-1000
WUMB has of course missed the boat, dropping folk just when it was about to
become the new black, to coin a phrase (no, I'm not, I know. Tell Janis I said hi - John).
"Get listenin', kids!" - from John Lennon to the WMUC kids who asked him for a station ID at the Bed-In.
John McLaughlin recently played...on Roots & Wings:
21. Wailing Jennys, Saucy Sailor, 40 Days, Red House

KCSB 91.9 FM from the University of California Santa Barbara - Webcast live at:
KCSB's slogan changes with the students who run the station here at UC Santa Barbara, but my favorite so far along with the inspired graphics
that went with it, which prominently featured a turntable among other things:"Bringing the Revolution to Your Radio."
Andy Doerr Roadtunes Sessions Playlist 2/19/08

22. Eliza Gilkyson - Requiem- Paradise Hotel Red House 2006
