The Flowing Waters of Lake Jefferson
Welcome to the member-funded, hydro-powered, volunteer-run studios of WJFF.

Saturday , 2010:

Folk Plus is a blend of contemporary and older singer songwriters with perhaps spoken word or Broadway tunes, or whatever may be relevant to the theme.  The station's website and stream are online at WWW.WJFFRADIO.ORG

Thanks to staff and station management for accommodating Angela's health issues and maintaining a chemical and fragrance free environment. Complying with these accommodations allow her to continue to volunteer Saturday mornings. Thanks also to John Webber for handling website and recording issues for Folk Plus.

Stan Rogers is a Canadian legend. He was born near hamilton Ontario but made his mark writing songs about the maritimes where is family were from.  Stan lost his life in 1983 in a plan fire after coming back from the Kerville Folk Festival. His songs involved the average worker and emotions of everyday people. His writing was excellent. He died early at 33 years old, who knows what he may have written if he were alive today  Today on FOlk Plus I'm airing a speical put together by WFDU's Ron Olesko. Ron interviewed Stans friends, producer and wife Ariel. Before we hear the audio documentary I want to air a few cuts of  his work as a backdrop as you hear his story.

I had a call this morning from relatives driving through The Rawdon Hills of Nova Scotia this morning. They are a bit northwest of Halifax. It is said that many years ago the government of Nova Scotia circulated false reports of a gold discovery to get more people to settle in that area.  Here is Stan's 'Rawdon Hills.' Check out the great imagery and writing. When we get into the audio documentary you will hear how  he changed his writing to this sort of focus.  I began with two songs, and then went into Ron's audio piece.

REMEMBERING STAN ROGERS BY Ron Olesko

(Ron's show TRADITIONS every Sunday from 3 to 6pm on WFDU-FM 89.1 in the NYC/Northern New Jersey
and on the web at www.wfdu.fm )

Playlist originally aired on WFDU on June 1, 2003, hosted by Ron Olesko

Guests: Ariel Rogers, Paul Mills, Grit Laskin & Shirley Keller's 1982 interview with Stan Rogers

This is what Ron wrote: Todays show was a 3 hour documentary/retrospective on the late Stan Rogers.  We broadcast it on the eve of the 20th
anniversary of his tragic death.    We tried to tell Stans story through music and commentary from those who knew him. We also heard from Stan himself, from a two part interview that he did at WFDU-FM's Teaneck studios in 1982 with former WFDU program host Shirley Keller.

I received e-mails from listeners in Canada, Cape Cod, Florida, England and points in between.   It was an honor to
produce this show and I appreciate that it was well received.    I am also so happy to see that many other radio
shows remembered Stan in their playlists.  I will produce a list in the next few days.

This three hour documentary took many long nights of editing over the past month and a half.  I found it very rewarding.
As you look at the playlist I'm sure you will wonder "why didn't he play such-and-such a song?"  Stan had so many
incredible songs that it was impossible to play all of them. I also had to leave out a number of great comments and
storys.  I could have easily turned this into a six hour broadcast, but I think it turned out real well.
