Songs about Singing 2-3 pm

Good afternoon and welcome to folk plus, today I will be with you for an hour doing indie folk music releases from the contemporary folk world from 2 -3pm , and then covering Jesse Ballew's show Jambalaya from 3 - 4pm.  On Folk Plus today, I will be airing songs about singing.   Starting with Mae Robertson who has won accolades from the Americal Library association and awards from Parents choice for her children's releases. Mae Grew up in Alabama and moved to the north east where she ran several kids stores and began a music label decidaced to kids which is not preachy or condescending.  Mae;s release Meet the Sun Halfway is for adults, she calls herself a  " song collector ," and on this release collects from Tom Waits and Elvis Costello among others. She will be singing "Singing with You" Following Mae we will hear from Laurie Lewis doing the classic How Can I keep from singing.

Last week I aired a special on Jack Hardy. Among those commenting for that special was Terre Roche. A bit I didn't use in the special was when Terre spoke about the time she and her sisters [Maggie and Suzzy] performed a song at the Bottom Line called "Before You Sing" that was written by Jack, now on his White Goddess, songs of Jack Hardy release. Here Terre speaks here about how the song was performed in masks, and how jack never actually sang, as each figure came out in their mask to interrupt his guitar playing : the maiden, the mother and the crone.  Here is Terre remembering singing the song at the bottom line:

8. Susan Werner  - Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter    4:04  -  Live At Tin Angel

Susan did a show for WJFF as a double bill with Ellis Paul years ago - their first gig together and they went on to do a few more after that. Susan was classicly trained as an opera singer, but has made a nice living at folk touring. Before Susan was Diana Jones doing 'Funeral Singer' from her latest called High Atmosphere. Diana appeared last week on Christopher street at the memorial gathering for Jack Hardy who passed away last month. She did his go tell the savior. Befoe Diana you heard the Roches doing a Jack Hardy song and Terre commenting on the unusual song "Before You Sing".   Up next, is the song that kicks off Joe crookston's latest called simply "I Sing."
